Broadway Cinema: They Come from Planet Earth: The Kaiju Genre At Large

Throughout a century of cinematic change and spectacle, audiences and creatives have continually returned to exploit the evocative imagery of beastly battling. Once more, giant monsters are popular. But, is the genre just an excuse to pit mighty beasts against one another in striking (and sometimes silly) displays of spectacle? Or, despite its fantastical nature, does the kaiju genre have a deeper message to impart about the world we live in?
This one-off course intends to answer that very question, tracing the deep, global history of kaiju eiga, exploring its many, fantastical films (and some of the farcical ones) so that we might decipher their political, environmental and social meanings, ultimately striving to offer a new way of looking at not only the different intentions of its creators, but at the kaiju genre at large.
